Verna Givens

After a courageous battle with cancer, Verna passed away peacefully on August 1, 2013 in Odessa, TX. Verna was born in Idabel, Oklahoma and raised in Chillicothe, TX. She was one of sixteen children born to Johnnie and Bobbie Givens. She graduated from Vernon High School. After high school graduation, she pursued her college studies at Jarvis Junior College and Odessa College. Verna was a member of Freedom Missionary Baptist Church, in Odessa, Tx, Reverend James Archie, Pastor. She held a counseling credential and was a licensed counselor at the Clover House.
Verna was preceded in death by her Father: two brothers, Norvell Givens and Levi Givens and two sisters Jennie Given and Anita Givens. Verna Will forever be remembered by her loving mother Bobbie Givens of Chillicothe Tx Beloved daughters Andrea Givens of Dallas, TX and Janalyn Givens of Odessa, TX devoted brothers James Givens of Fort Worth, Tx, Garry Givens of Odessa, Tx, Larry Givens of Midland, Tx, Quanah Givens, Johnnie B. Givens of Odessa, Tx loving sisters Vera McDow of Dallas, Earsie Moore of Odessa, Tx Katie Givens of Chillicothe, TX. Annie Norice of Odessa, Tx, and Mary Graves of Chillicothe, TX. treasured grandchildren Jade Jackson, niece Earsla Graves whom Verna took in at the age of 11, and a special friend Rosemary Hammond. Verna will also be affectionately remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends who were blessed to know her. Verna enjoyed playing second mom to so many and loved sewing, watching same shows, listening to gospel music, laughing being a peacemaker amongst friends, family, coworkers and clients. Verna touched the lives of her nieces and nephews with her exponential generosity and honest mentorship. She impacted so many other lives with her smile, listing ear and her wisdom. Verna maintained her faith and strong will all the way to the end. Funeral Arrangement are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.
