Sunrise: April 21, 1967 - Sunset: May 2, 2026

Serena Evette Christian was born on April 21, 1967, in Odessa, Texas, as the youngest of five children to Clarence Edward Christian and Rosie Lee Christian.

At an early age, Serena confessed her faith in Christ and was baptized at St. Matthew Baptist Church by the late Rev. Rufus McClain. Growing up in St. Matthew, she was deeply involved in the youth department under the leadership of her mother, Rosie Christian. She actively participated in Sunday School, B.T.U. (Baptist Training Union), and the local Baptist Congress. Serena also served faithfully as a member of the Junior Usher Board and the Youth Choir.

She attended Phyllis Wheatley Day Care, Travis Elementary, and Blackshear Junior High before enrolling at Ector High School. While at Ector, Serena was a talented saxophonist in the Mighty Eagle Marching Band and a member of the freshman volleyball team. After her freshman year, when Ector transitioned into a junior high school in 1982, she transferred to Permian High School. There, she continued to showcase her musical talent as a saxophonist in the Mighty Mojo Band and proudly graduated in 1985.

In her younger years, Serena also enjoyed playing softball, where she was coached by her father, Clarence Edward Christian.

Serena was a gifted vocalist as well, singing in a band for several years and lifting her voice in the St. Matthew Baptist Church “Wrecking Crew” choir, where she often led songs with passion and spirit. Through the influence of her big brother, Edward Christian, she developed a deep love for 70s funk music.

Following graduation, Serena attended Odessa College. She worked for many years at the Citel call center and later dedicated herself to caring for others as a nursing home and in-home caregiver. She also served as the church secretary at St. Matthew Baptist church for a number of years. Serena found great joy in spending time with family and friends, especially during holidays and cookouts, where laughter, storytelling, and cherished memories were always shared.

When she was feeling her best, Serena devoted her time and love to her daughter, Dashira, and her beloved granddaughter, A’kyah. She especially enjoyed watching A’kyah dance. Serena also loved talking on the phone, often spending hours laughing and catching up with her dearest friends, closest family members, and special nephews or nieces…… she was That Aunt!!!
