Modesta 'Moy' Hernandez
Lujan
Feb 24, 1938 — Oct 19, 2026
Modesta Hernandez Lujan 88, lovingly known as Moy, passed away on October 19, 2026, in Odessa, Texas. Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and has gone home to be with the Lord.
Modesta was born on February 24, 1938, in Shafter, Texas, to Francisca and Tómas Hernandez, who preceded her in death. She attended the historic Blackwell Junior High School in Marfa, Texas, and graduated from Marfa High School in 1956, where she was a starting forward for the Women’s Shorthorn Basketball Team. Modesta remained active in her community, serving as secretary of the Marfa Violeta Club, a women’s organization dedicated to civic, social, and cultural engagement. She later continued her education in El Paso, where she attended business school and worked as a clerk for prominent West Texas attorney Warren E. Burnett.
On September 29, 1961, Modesta married the love of her life, Miguel Lujan, in Odessa, Texas. Though Miguel passed away before her, we find comfort in imagining them reunited in heaven, celebrating what would have been their 65th wedding anniversary together.
Modesta was also preceded in death by her siblings: Sebastian Hernandez, Maria Gaspar, Faustino Hernandez, Julia Hill, Isaac Hernandez, Mariano Hernandez, Hipolito Hernandez, and Jose Hernandez.
She leaves behind a loving family who will continue to cherish her memory. She is survived by her daughters: Sandra Ramirez and her husband, Henry Ramirez; Sylvia Lujan; Linda Rodriguez and her husband, Albert Rodriguez; and Lori Gallegos and her husband, Michael Gallegos.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Moses Rodriguez; Vanessa Venegas and her husband, Raul Dominguez; Stacie Vizueth and her husband, Cristian Vizueth; Ryan Ramirez; Valerie Gallegos Gonzales and her husband, Daniel Gonzales; Christopher Rodriguez; Mikey Gallegos; Sierrah Ramirez; and Derek Cedillo.
She is also survived by her beloved great-grandchildren: Kassadee Gabaldon and her husband, Christian Gabaldon; Xavier Vizueth; R.D. Dominguez; Amaia Vizueth; and Louie Canton, who will carry her memory forward for generations to come.
The Lujan family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of ExcelaCare Hospice and the medical team at 5 Central Medical Center Hospital for the compassion, kindness, and care they provided to Modesta and her family during this difficult time. Your dedication and support brought comfort to our family, and we will always be grateful.
Visitation is set for Monday, October 26, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00pm at Martinez Funeral Home chapel in Odessa, Texas. The funeral mass is set for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Ector County Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers in loving honor of Moy are her sons-in-law, Henry Ramirez, Albert Rodriguez, and Michael Gallegos, and her grandsons, Ryan Ramirez, Christopher Rodriguez, and Derek Cedillo.
Though we say goodbye for now, we find peace in knowing that Moy is resting in the loving arms of God. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love a gift that will remain with us always.
