Lonnie Jay Jones Jr., 52, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on April 1,2026. Born on his birthday in 1974 to Lonnie Jones Sr. and Bellen Jones. Lonnie remained a proud, lifelong Odessan. A standout athlete, Lonnie’s legacy began at Permian High School, where he was a key member of the 1991 State Championship team, breaking multiple records during his high school career.
After graduating in 1993, he continued his academic and athletic pursuits at Sul Ross University. Lonnie’s passion for the game led him back home to coach youth football for the Redskins and Cowboys. In 2009, he moved to the professional ranks as the running back coach for the Odessa Texas Roughnecks, where he took immense pride in helping the team succeed. Outside of sports, Lonnie was a fixture at Lithia Hyundai of Odessa for over 15 years. He rose from a top salesman to a Finance Manage, known for his work ethic and leadership. Above all, Lonnie was the life of the party. He had a rare gift for leaving every room brighter than he found it. He was a devoted farther and family man who loved playing pool and spending his Sunday’s bowling with his significant other.
Lonnie is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, landers Jones Jr. and Beatrice Jones; his maternal grandmother, Rosalve Martinez Orona; and his bonus grandmother, Glory Lee Ivory of Irving, Texas. He was also preceded by his aunts, Doris Haynes Cooper, Yvonne Jones Mcgee, and
Lydia A. Jones, as well as his uncle, Landers E. Jones III.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his four sons, Jaythan Jones (Brianna), Jamere Jones, Jorri Brannon (Alexis), and Des Murry, all of Odessa, Texas. One daughter, Shelbie Rassatt Jones of Oklahoma.
Lonnie is also survived by his significant other Marla Tsosie of Odessa, Texas; his parents, Lonnie Jones Sr. and Bellen Jones of Odessa, Texas, and his bonus mother, Pat Childress of Irving, Texas. His legacy continues through his three sisters, Cindy Renteria (David), Dally Molinar (Daniel), and Veatris Pantoja (Armando); his three brothers, Gilbert Tellez (Latica); Tony Jones (Alejandra), Bubba Jones (Sabra), and Jim Jones all of Odessa, Texas. He is also survived by his aunt, Junell Jones-Pearson of Odessa, Texas and his uncle Bryace Todd Jones (Melanie) of Dallas, Texas. Lonnie’s joy was his six grandchildren: Bri’Ella Rassatt Jones, Bryce Watkins, Kaeson Turner, Eastyn Jones, Gracelynn Cage, and Xia Brannon. He also leaves behind his bonus brothers, Hasaan Rice, Tony Perez, Steve Garcia, Devoron Carroll, and Aerek Meyers, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
Visitation is set for Tuesday April 14, 2026, from 1pm-9pm at Martinez Funeral Home chapel.
The Celebration of Life Service is set for 10am Wednesday April 15, 2026, at Crossroads Fellowship 6901 E Highway Frontage Rd Odessa, TX 79762. with Pastor Craig Godfrey officiating and Pastor Venshard Dobbins sharing the eulogy.
