Obituary

Jose "Papi" Chavez Lopez, 84, of Balmorhea, Texas, Surrounded by His Loving Family, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa ,Texas

Jose was born on February 17, 1942, in Pecos, Texas, to Maria Chavez and Domingo Lopez. Papi, was a loving, caring, humble, and hardworking man whose greatest joy came from his family. Known affectionately as "Papi," he touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his kindness, quiet strength, and generous heart.

Jose dedicated many years of service as a Heavy Equipment Operator with the Texas Department of Transportation. He took great pride in his work and earned the respect of his co-workers, through his dedication, integrity, and strong, work ethic.

Jose was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dominga Lopez; his sons, Joe “Goo” Lopez and David "Tato" Lopez; and his daughter, Olga Opperude.

He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Lori "Sammy" Baeza; his son, Randy Lopez; his cherished grandchildren, Joe Derrick Mendoza, Ronnie Joe Lopez, David Chamorro, Jonathan Chamorro, Keith Baeza, Robbie Mendoza, Brandon Mendoza, Shaun Baeza, Sonny Lopez, Dana Mendoza, Dillon McDonald, Natalie Baeza, Athalia Aguilar, Brandie Lopez, Tonya Lopez, Isabella Jurado, and JJ Lopez; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Robbie Mendoza, Brandon Mendoza, Keith Baeza, Shaun Baeza, Natalie Baeza, Brandie Lopez, Dillon McDonald, JJ Lopez, and Mickie Mendoza.

Jose's life was a beautiful example of love, humility, and devotion to family. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love him.

The family of Jose "Papi" Lopez wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all family and friends for the love, prayers, support, and kindness shown during this difficult time.

Visitation will be held Monday July 27, 2026 from 10AM-9PM with a Rosary at 7PM in The Outside Chapel of Martinez Funeral Home -The Dixie Location.

Mass will be held Tuesday July 28, 2026 at 10am at St. Joseph1s Catholic Church

with Burial taking place at 1:30PM—2:30Pm at Balmorhea Cemetery in Balmorhea Texas
