Gary Steven Everett

March 12, 1941 — June 27, 2023

Odessa, Texas

Gary Everett, long-time resident of Odessa, passed away on June 27, 2023. Born March 12, 1941 in Kermit TX, Gary’s personality was a considered balance of deliberation, playful humor, and kindness that touched all who know him. Whether a situation called for a cool head, seriousness, or a humorous touch, Gary had the gift for responding in the way that was needed. Through his words and deeds, he was considerate and compassionate toward friends, family, pets, and strangers. He never shirked a task and could always be counted on to fulfill his obligations.

Gary was an accomplished all-around athlete graduating from Ector High School in 1959. He was the first baseman on the baseball team, a guard on the basketball team, and starting quarterback for the football team with the unique ability to throw passes with either arm in game. In college, he was the starting quarterback at Sul Ross University and later transferred to Texas A&M University to play sports and continue his education, he ultimately graduated from West Texas State University. Professionally, he served as a coach and teacher for 30 years at Ector, Blackshear, and Crockett Junior High in Odessa.

Most important in his life is that Gary is a believer in Christ, so his last day with us is his best day as it is his 1st day to be in the presence of the Lord. He was baptized at 8 years old and loved and worshipped God throughout his life, he shared God’s plan for salvation to nonbelievers. He was active in the church serving as a Sunday-school teacher and deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church, with his last church membership at Mission Dorado Baptist Church. In his advanced years with dementia, Gary could still be seen clutching to his bibles, singing praise to the Lord, and rarely missing a chance to silently say grace at the dinner table.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jacque Risinger Everett and was graced by her absolute love and devotion throughout his life. In addition, he is survived by his son (Scott), daughter (Laura and her husband Sean Fields), granddaughters (Meredith and her husband Calvin Ho, Audra and her husband Blake Smith), brother (James and his wife Patricia), sisters (Elaine Sperberg and Joyce Eastwood). Gary is preceded in death by his parents (Raymond and Evelyn Everett).
