Obituary

 January 13, 1932 – June 26, 2026

Evangelina Gomez Garay, 94, of Odessa, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Evangelina was born on January 13, 1932, in Ruidosa, Texas, to Pablo Gomez and Anita Gonzales Gomez. She made Odessa her home for most of her life, where she built a large and loving family and created a lifetime of cherished memories.

Lovingly known by her family as “Grammy,” Evangelina was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and the heart of her family.

She was known for her strong, direct, and commanding presence, but also for her big heart and deep love for those closest to her.

Grammy had a way of making her presence known and her love felt.

She was an amazing cook, and her family will especially remember her one-of-a-kind beans, mac & cheese, and chili verde , all made with the kind of love that could never be duplicated. She also enjoyed shopping, thrifting, and anything that allowed her to look and feel beautiful.

Later in life, one of her favorite things to do was read and sort through mail, a simple routine ,that brought her joy.

Evangelina was preceded in death by her husband, Manual Garay; her parents, Pablo and Anita Gomez; her brother, Valentin Gomez; her sons, Baldemar “Wally” Garay and Roberto “Rob” Garay; her grandson, Jesse Manuel Porras IV; and her great-grandson, Gavin Muñoz.

She is survived by her brother, Ysmael Gomez of Hobbs, New Mexico, daughters, Rosa Gonzales and husband of Odessa, Texas, and Sulema Porras and husband of Odessa, Texas. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many other family members who will continue to honor her memory.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Alvarez, Tyler Muñoz, Devin Rangel, Austin Rangel, Zakari Rangel, and Isaiah Belis.
