Dora Alonzo Cortez

April 20, 1927 — March 20, 2024

The world became brighter on April 20, 1927, the day that Dora Cortez was born. She was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on March 20, 2024. Dora was born in Elmendorf, Texas to Francisca Goana and Encarnacion Alonzo. She was a devout Catholic, and through her love of serving, attained the roles of president of Catholic Women's Organization and Midland-Odessa Deanery, member of the Guadalupanas and Odessa Lions Club, and volunteered her time to Catholic Charities.

She enjoyed vacationing with her daughters on their annual trip to Las Vegas and celebrating Fiesta, San Antonio. Dora showed her love in many forms, which included cooking her infamous tamales and instructing Ballet Folklorico.

Dora leaves behind a legacy for her family with the traditions she started, like elaborate Christmas celebrations. She showed resilience by continuing to be a pillar of strength for her family. Despite being left a widow at 45, she remained steadfast in her faith and her devotion to her family.

Welcoming her at the gates of heaven are her beloved husband, Martin Cortez, her 6 children, Richard Cortez, Paula Mackowiak, Esperanza (Hope) Cortez, Lydia Cortez, Hortencia Mancha, and Sylvia Bustos. She is survived by Consuelo Delgado, Yolanda Herrera (Elyceo), Rosie Silva (Mike), Martin Cortez Jr., Frances Hernandez, Elvia Munoz (Joe), Brenda and Lisa Cortez, 22 grandchildren, 38 great- grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, her cherished best friend Teresa Carrasco and the Carrasco family.
