Darrell Wayne Christian was born September 18, 1962, in Odessa, Texas to the parentage of Clarence Edward Christian and Rosie Lee Christian.
Darrell confessed his faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Matthew Baptist Church by the late Rev. Rufus McClain. While growing up in St. Matthew, Darrell was deeply involved in the youth department under the leadership of his mother Rosie Christian. He was an active participant in Sunday School, B.T.U. (Baptist Training Union), and the local Baptist congress. He was also a member of the Jr. usher board and the youth choir. Throughout his life, Darrell continued reading, studying, learning and knowing the word of God even enrolling in and completing classes earning several certificates.
He attended Phyllis Wheatley Day Care, Travis Elementary and Blackshear Jr. High before attending Ector High School. While at Ector, he was a percussionist along with his big brother “Ed” in the Mighty Eagle Marching Band and a manager/trainer for the varsity football team. He graduated from Ector High School in 1981. In his younger years, he played baseball for El Paso products, coached by his father, Clarence Edward Christian and Mr. Jessie B. Watkins.
After graduation, he attended The Texas State Technical school in Waco, Texas along with his cousin, Johnny Williams and close friends, Tyree Beck and Eskee Sutton. While at The Texas State Technical School, he earned a certificate as a certified welder. After graduating, he returned to Odessa and was employed by Permian Tanks for a number of years. In later years, he worked for his big brother with Christian’s Lawn service and Christian’s Asphalt and paving.
He loved spending time with friends and family and sharing childhood memories with his nieces, nephews and daughters. There was never a dull moment when “DC” was around. He was bound to have you laughing about something. He loved playing jokes on his siblings, and especially his Mom. And because of his big brother, he too developed a love for 70’s funk.
Darrell was blessed with two beautiful daughters whom he truly adored. Though life’s path kept him distant from his daughters at times, his love for them never wavered. In his later years, he was given the profound gift of reconciliation, a chance to rebuild the bond he had long held in his heart. With grace, forgiveness, and deep affection, they welcomed him.
Although the dynamics of Darrell’s relationship with his daughters and grandchildren was nothing short of special. Some of his most cherished moments between he and his daughters came later in life. Some very special moments recalled were one Christmas a few years back when Darrell had gotten back on his feet, he reached out to his sister Regina who was often his financial advisor and told her to make sure she bought Christmas presents from him for everyone. The sheer happiness when he gave those gifts to everyone on Christmas day could light up any space.
In those final months and weeks, his daughters Delandra and Deleisha and son-in-law Shaquay became one of his greatest sources of comfort, visiting him in the hospital every day and caring for him with unwavering devotion. Their presence made it unmistakably clear: he loved them deeply, and they loved him in return.
