Columbus Cooper Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday July,3,2022 after a lengthy illness at Madison Medical Resort. He was 80 years of age, he was a christian believer.
Columbus was born on January,13,1942 in Crockett Texas to the parentage of Columbus (Jack) and Jewel B. Cooper, the eldest of three including Marilyn Cooper, and Silver Kaydeen Cooper. As a child his family would move to Odessa Texas where Columbus would make his lifelong residence. Columbus known as Jr.,C.J., Cooper and Poppy attended public school in Odessa Texas, which included Douglas Elementary School, Carver Jr.High School, Blackshear High School, Tyler Barber School in Dallas Texas and Odessa College. Columbus graduated from Blackshear High School. While at Blackshear he received the 1st. place award in the Ector County School District city-wide arts and crafts contest for his leather satchel. Columbus married Wanda Jackson in 2013.A true jack of all trades Columbus possessed many skills and accomplishments in addition to Upholstery, Masonry, Welding, Culinary, Barber, Mechanic, Carpentry and an Entrepreneur. In November 2008 Columbus was awarded the "Hall of fame award" by the Black Chamber Of Commerce of Odessa honoring his many lifelong achievements in the Odessa community. Columbus retired as a Master Barber after 26+ years, he then went to work for and retired from Phillips Petroleum after 20+ years, while at Phillips Petroleum Columbus held numerous positions among which were Industrial Mechanic, Carpentry, and Field Valve Technician Coordinator. After which he went on to work several years for the Odessa Country Club as the locker room attendant. Columbus believed his greatest accomplishment in life was being a Father and provider to his six children whom he loved and adored along with his nineteen grandchildren, and thirty great grandchildren whom all fondly called him poppy. Columbus became instantly excited when he or anyone would call out the name of "Jesus" his Lord and Saviour. Columbus life moto's where : "to make a mark in life" and " to leave a legacy behind".
Preceded in death by his parents Columbus and Jewel, sister Silver Kadeen, daughter Ruby Jewel and grand son Elijah Wilburn.
Columbus leaves to cherish his memories, daughter's Cecelia Denise Colvin (Tommy) Channelview Texas, Josonya Rodriguez Dallas Texas, Tamaris Lynn Powell (Lee) Fort Worth Texas, Son's Victor D. Cooper (Sonya), Rev. Columbus (Chris) Cooper (Gloria) both of Odessa, nineteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, sisters Marilyn Cooper Williams (A.J.) Clovis California, Jackie Greenville Austin Texas, Patricia White (Lester) Andrews Texas, brother Paul Grimes Midland Texas.
The family would like to thank everyone who touched his life and ours and made them richer. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A special thanks to those of you who worked so diligently and faithfully helping him these past few years. Thanks to Dr.Raja Naidu and staff, Dr. Ronald Gibbons and staff, Dr. Darrell Parsons and staff, Odessa Regional Medical Center staff, Interim Healthcare staff, Medical Center Hospital staff and Madison Medical Resort staff.
Visitation will be 1:00pm. to 9:00pm. Friday July 22, 2022 at Martinez Funeral Home and Crematory 1040 s. Dixie Blvd. Odessa Texas, 79761.
A celebration of life Service for Columbus will be held at River Of Hope 3601 n. Dixie Blvd. Odessa Texas 79762 on Saturday July, 23,2022, at 10:00 am., Officiate Pastor Renee and Steve Phillips.
Interment will follow at, American Heritage Cemetery Funeral Home Crematory 4100 FM 1788 Midland Texas 79707.
