Celia Mendoza Porras, 85, of Odessa, Tx, was called home by the Lord on September 23, 2021 in Odessa, Tx.
She married Jesus Porras on July 31, 1954, in Big Spring, Tx. Then they moved to Odessa, Tx. in 1956 and became parishioners at St. Anthony’s and St. Joseph’s churches.
She was a devoted Catholic and was involved in many activities with the church such as festivals, women’s auxiliary, St. Anthony’s and St. Joseph’s kitchen group, the cursillitas, and was a member of Las Guadalupanas.
She worked at Hotel Settles in Big Spring as the elevator girl/receptionist and then went on to work in Odessa doing retail and for the ECISD.
She loved to do many crafts and making presents for all her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids turning ordinary things to looking extraordinary. She also loved to cook for everyone and making new recipes for everyone to try out. She was involved a lot with her grandkids and great grandkids that loved her greatly.
Anytime she could, she would be out on the dancefloor doing the jitterbug and with anyone that would take her out for a spin. Celia had a good sense of humor when her husband would play jokes on her. She would then turn around and play them on her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Porras, daughter, Berta Porras (Martha’s twin), her parents Ysa and Maria Mendoza, her sister, Sofia (Cruz) Rubio, her infant brother, and her grandson, Jesus (mijo) Porras IV, and her daughter-in-law, Christina Porras and son in law Robert Olivas Sr.
She is survived by her son, Juan Porras from Wichita Falls, Tx., daughter, Mary (Lolly) Olivas of Weatherford, Tx., son, Jesus (Jessie) Porras III & spouse Sulema, daughter, Martha Rey & spouse Juan (Johnny) Rey, daughter, Cecelia (Cissy) Porras, son, Edward Porras & Armando Renteria, and son, Michael Porras & spouse Yvonne Porras all who are from Odessa, Tx. As well as 22 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday October 7 at 4 pm at Martinez Funeral Home. Also on the same day will be the Vigil at 6 pm and then the Rosary will start at 7 Pm.
Funeral Services will be held at Holy Redeemer at 10 am on Friday October 8, 2021with Father Fernando Bonillo of Holy Redeemer, officiating. Burial will follow at Ector County Cemetery, Rose Hill Section. Arrangements are by Martinez Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Juan R. Porras, Alejandro Porras, Miguel Porras, Julianna García, Juan M. Porras, Joshua Porras, Robert Olivas II, and Johnathan Porras.
The family of Celia Porras wishes to extend our sincere thanks to St. Joseph’s Home Health Nurses, Transcend Hospice nurses, and Heart to Heart Hospice nurses for helping care for her.
