Deacon A.J. Hammond

Andrew James Hammond, fondly known as A.J or Granddaddy was born in Reagan, TX to the late Ben Hammond and Louise Moody on August 4, 1929. A.J. married Lucile Roger in 1949 in Marlin, TX. From this union three children were born. Deacon Hammond united with the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church in 1951 under the leadership of Reverend H. Goings where he was ordained as a deacon and remained until his departure on September 6, 2024. Deacon Hammond was the last of the surviving charted members and Deacon of Rose of Sharon where he remained united until 2021 when his health failed him. He loved his church and his present pastor Reverend Windsor Archie, for whom he had deep respect.

 Deacon Hammond is preceded in death by his parents Ben Hammond and Louise Moody, his wife Lucile Hammond and His children Connie, Donnie, and Mary. 

 AJ leaves to cherish and honor his memory Daughter: Rose Hammond of Odessa, TX, Katherine Johnson of Marlin, TX. Son: Dwayne (Debra) Broadus of Bryan, TX. Grandchildren: Shenequia (Jerry) Thomas, Katrina (Adam) Marshall, Chaviya Hammond, Demarcus Morrison, Jhametric Hammond and Tony Allen. 30 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

 The visitation and viewing of Deacon AJ is set for Friday September 13, 2024, from 1PM-9 PM at Martinez Funeral Home chapel.

 The celebration service of Deacon AJ’s life is set for 11AM Saturday September 14, 2024, at Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church 1615 E Murphy St. Odessa, TX with Rev. Windsor Archie officiating.

 Cremation will follow at a later date.
