Alvino Gomez, 83, of Odessa, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 21, 2006.
He was born in Presidio, Texas on December 31, 1942, to Francisco and Andrea (Gamboa) Gomez. He attended, Rusk, Travis, Milam and Ector Jr/Sr High School. He joined the US Army in 1962; was stationed in Germany and Honorably discharged in 1964. On August,10,1991, he married Rebecca Dominguez, in Pecos, TX
Alvin took great pride in his work and to some extent was a workaholic. He was happiest when he was working and continued working after his retirement until January of this year. Being punctual was a must, so one could count on his early arrival—sometimes, too early! He cherished his friends; and, delighted in being around them—especially on the golf course! He loved to make his family & friends “sweat,” by making the hottest Chile Verde con Carne; or, just enjoying his Asado and NOT the watery chile colorado con carne.
For several years, he cooked the best barbecue—beef, goat or brisket. In 1989, he entered the World Championship Barbecue Beef Cook-off in Pecos and won Best Camp. Told that it took “rookies” four to five years of competition to win, he won first place on his second attempt--in 1990. In ’91 and ’92 he, again, won First Place. He would brag that the cook-off was discontinued because Odessa’s “Wild Bunch” was on a roll!
He was a family man and loved when his musically-talented Gomez family sang at various gatherings. He especially loved it when his cousin Diana & niece, Connie, would arrive with guitars in hand! He loved to joke and make people laugh. When his super favorite Okie cousins came to town, one sure stop was at Alvin’s because love & laughter abounded!
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco & Andrea Gomez, his beloved son, Damian; and, sister, Elena. Surviving are wife, Rebecca; daughter, Michele (Byron) Rachal; daughter-in-law, Debra; sons, Fabian, Gilbert & Tommy Dominguez; grandchildren, Alexis, Donovan, Katelynn, Dylan & Dorian; Katie, Rebeckah, Luiz, Levi, Marisela & Gilbert, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh & Kailo Ray; brother, Frank; sisters, Katie Villesca & Vickie Gomez; and, numerous family members.
